On the eve of the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, Rector of the University of Tartu Toomas Asser announced the university’s contribution to society award, research award and language award and the recipients of the teaching staff of the year award for 2023.

Based on the submitted proposals, the committee formed by the UT Student Union chose the recipients of the teaching staff of the year awards for 2023.

In January Gunnar Nurk became a professor of high-temperature energy materials at the University of Tartu in the Institute of Chemistry

In January, Jaak Nerut becomes a new professor of electrochemistry in the Institute of Chemistry

Tartu City Council assigned the titles of Honorary Citizen of Tartu and the honorary decorations Tartu Täht on 25 January. Enn Lust, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Tartu was granted the title of Honorary Citizen.

Tõnis Laasfeld is a Research Fellow of Bioorganic Chemistry at the University of Tartu in the Institute of Chemistry and a data scientist at Proekspert. On August 29th of this year, under the supervision of professor of Bioorganic Chemistry Ago Rinken and Dr Leopold Parts.

In Tallinn, the EcoBaltic 23rd conference took place from October 9th to 11th, organized by the Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics and the University of Tartu.

On 27 October, the University of Tartu senate decided to award the Johan Skytte medal to Margit Sutrop, member of the Riigikogu and Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Tartu. The highest award granted to university members, the University of Tartu Grand Medal, is given to two university researchers for services of particular value. Also, the recipients of the University of Tartu Star of Appreciation, Medal, Badge of Distinction and the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu” have been selected.

The first-year master's student in the chemistry program at the University of Tartu, Mattias Kaspar Krõlov, has been awarded the prestigious Alan Roy Katritzky Scholarship.
