UT and museums reveal exciting life of science on Researchers’ Night

From 20 to 25 September, several research institutions, incl. the University of Tartu and the university museums, open their doors for the Researchers’ Night Festival. In the course of the diverse programme, researchers come out of hiding from their laboratories and discuss generally educating topics in bars, the open air cinema and nature.

Monday, 21 September

At 18:00 you can broaden your horizon in Tartu Nature House (at Lille 10) where UT’s Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy and pharmacist Ain Raal explains in Estonian how the chemical structure of herbs influences our health and talks about the basics of herbal medicine. A great opportunity to get to know the Nature House!

At 20:00–22:00, the movie “Lucy” is shown in the open air cinema in the parking lot of AHHAA Science Centre (at Sadama 1).

Wednesday, 23 September

At 20:00–22:00 the movie “We need to talk about Kevin” is shown in the open air cinema in the parking lot of AHHAA Science Centre (at Sadama 1).

Friday, 25 September

Researchers’ Night free special buses take you to the Tartu Observatory, UT Chemicum and other places.

From 18:00, you are welcome at Vanemuise 46 for a programme compiled by the UT Natural History Museum, Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences and the Department of Zoology.

Programme of the Natural History Museum

• 18:00–22:00 activities for kids. Let’s make simple but effective lifesavers – reflectors.
• 19:00–20:00 workshop “Become friends with exotic pets” (room 248)
• 21:00–22:00 workshop “Become friends with exotic pets” (room 248)
• 22:00–23:00 Presentation “Relaxing sounds of nature” (room 247). Veljo Runnel plays a selection of relaxing sounds from nature.

Programme of the Department of Zoology

• 19:00–22:00 workshop “Crazy about zoology” (hallway of the second floor). Get to know animals by their skulls and faeces. Make a treat ball for birds and get to know how to feed birds in winter etc.

Programme of the Department of Geography

• 18:00–22:00 workshop “Smartphones in the research of human movement” (in the foyer).
• 18:00–22:00 workshop “My ecological footprint” (foyer).
• 18:00–22:00 workshop on geoinformatics “Journey from data collection to spacial conclusions” (rooms 230 and 231).
• 19:30 lecture “Measuring the mobility” (room 247). Rein Ahas discusses mobility in Estonian.

At 18:00–21:00 Competence Centre on Health Technologies and Tartu Biotechnology Park are welcoming visitors (at Tiigi 61b). Among other things, the UT Travelling Biolab is there and you can try your hand at examining your own DNA.

At 18:00–22:00 the UT Art Museum is open (at Ülikooli 18) where the Estonian Medical Students’ Association will show you how broken bones are fixed.

At 18:00–22:00 the dark Middle Ages descend on the Tartu City Museum (at Narva mnt 23) and UT archaeologists will diagnose diseases and show human bones.

At 20:00–22:30 everyone interested is welcome at the UT Botanical Gardens (at Lai 38). The exhibition “Health, taste, scent and beauty from Lamiaceae” is displayed in the study rooms of the Botanical Gardens.

At 18:00–23:00 UT museum (at Lossi 25) organises workshops with the Mad Scientist. For one last time before the renovation works you can visit the exhibitions “The art of understanding nature” and “HEAD: the world on your shoulders”.

At 18:30–20:30 the University of Tartu Chemicum (at Ravila 14a) opens the doors to their chemistry and experimental psychology laboratories. A more detailed programme.

At 20:00–22:00 UT Institute of Psychology (at Näituse 2-211) welcomes you to their PsychoBus.
